It is a very picturesque part of Viti Levu, however, with jagged green mountains of the interior and some sugar cane plantations on the lower plains.
In the very north of the island of Viti Levu is Rakiraki town. It's a picturesque, tranquil area still untouched by commercialism with some excellent diving. The mountainous region around Rakiraki is home to the world renowned 'Fiji Water'.
The highlight of this area as far as beaches go is the offshore island of Nananu-i-Ra, a short boat trip off from Rakiraki. Great for beachcombing, sunbathing, and diving. The island is not too large and one may walk around it in less than half a day.
At Vatukoula there is a vast gold mine, and there are several provincial market towns such as Ba and Rakiraki.
There are a number of good dive operators in this area.
