The largest and most cosmopolitan city in Fiji, it is considered the hub of the South Pacific Islands with the University of the South Pacific, Fiji government buildings, foreign embassies and regional headquarters.
Suva is built on a hilly peninsula surrounded by rainforest. The mountains north and west catch the southeast trade winds, producing moist conditions year round. The centre of Suva is a mixture of old colonial buildings and modern architecture.
Throughout the city are colourful flowering gardens and waving palm trees. Here you will find good restaurants, lively bars and over 20 night-clubs offering everything from local reggae to blues. There is also a colourful local market and some fine shops. A sprawling complex of municipal markets near the waterfront comes to life on Fridays and Saturdays, where you can find an assortment of artefacts and handicrafts for sale, made by Fijians throughout the island group.
Suva's international airport is located a 20 minute drive from the CBD in the town of Nausori.
