Fiji's northern region includes its second and third largest islands, Vanua Levu and Taveuni, as well as the smaller islands of Laucala, Qamea, Matagi, Namenalala, Nukubati and Kaimbu.
The largest northern island of Vanua Levu and its smaller neighbor Taveuni, Fiji's Garden Island, are popular destinations for their diving, marine life and spectacular tropical jungles.
Most residents live in villages supporting themselves in a way of life thousands of years old and the general pace of life remains unchanged. Roads are generally unsealed and electricity is generated locally.
Once a center for the copra trade, sugar cultivation is the most important industry and large cane fields can be seen on the dry western and northern coasts.
The largest centers of population are Labasa, a thriving business center tied to the sugar industry, and Savusavu, a small but pretty town with a number of hot springs nearby. Savusavu is gaining popularity as a dive destination and yachting community.
It's only a half hour scenic flight on to the island of Taveuni with its lush tropical rainforests and waterfalls. Divers are drawn to Taveuni for its amazing underwater habitant including the 31km long rainbow reef.
Activities in the region include scuba diving, kayaking, snorkeling, mountain bikes, swimming, golf, tennis, sailing, fishing, overnight yacht charters, trekking, easy hikes to waterfalls, rainforests & streams.
Less strenuous activities include visits to a spa for a relaxing massage, village tours, shopping in town for fabrics and handicrafts, a trip to the open air market, sampling some of the local restaurants or just relaxing by the pool or the sea.
